Siem Reap, Cambodia: Day 1

We flew into Siem Reap and spent the afternoon relaxing at the hotel, swimming and watching the sunset. This is the view of our hotel and pool on our first night.

The next morning, we hired a guide and got the tuk tuk from the hotel to take us to Angkor Wat, the most famous temple in the complex. We should start big, right?

In front of the Angkor Wat temple and the lake.
I was totally obsessed with these windows.  It's amazing to me that one thousand years ago someone would have spend months carving this detail into a window.
The many arms of Vishnu inside the entry way to Angkor Wat.
Standing in front of Angkor Wat.
The temple in the reflecting pool.
One of the many very long hallways.
Inside the complex.  Looking at the main temple area.
One of the beautiful Apsara (a female spirit of the clouds and waters in Buddhist and Hindu mythology) carvings...with another one of those amazing windows in the background.

Looking up at "heaven."  The main temple which requires a very steep climb, covered limbs, and no children.
More carvings.

Again, I was just amazed by the detailed carvings.  Every one of these internal supports was intricately carved.
I was very drawn to this statue of Buddha at the top of Angkor Wat's main temple area.
More carvings around the doorway.  I thought that the circles were spectacular.
The way back down from heaven.  They built a staircase a few years ago after a tourist fatality.  I was very thankful for the wooden stairs and the handrail!
Outside Angkor Wat!
Teddy had a great time hanging out with our guide, Vanny.  They even spied some monkeys together.  Can you see them?

We then travelled down the road to the Ta Prohm temple, which was featured in the film Tomb Raider.  It was swallowed by the jungle and has recently been reclaimed.

Teddy and Michael goofing around!
And goofing around again!

We then traveled to our guide's favorite temple, Bayon.  He used to go to school in the Angkor Wat complex and walked past this temple everyday.

More climbing.
Noses together with the Buddha.

Faces.

Christmas Vacation 2012

Updates coming as soon as I can get through our zillions of photos!

Here is where it all began...we flew to Bangkok and took a puddle jumper into Siem Reap to start our Christmas adventure.
