Jordan - Shoubak Castle

On our way to Petra, we took a beautiful drive from the mountains all the way down to the Dead Sea.  It was our first look at the Sea from up close.  The colors were amazing - deep blue, turquoise, and white salt.

Of course, I needed a picture next to the Dead Sea!

We then turned inland and started to wind our way up into the mountains.  What a view!

At the very top of the mountain, Hani stopped so we could get some coffee and tea, and the boys found two absolutely adorable puppies to play with.  They both begged us to take them home but I don't think they would have fit in our carryon!

We needed a family picture from what felt like the top of the world!

And another one!

We finally made it to Shobak Castle, which was built in 1115.  We had a tour guide for our time in the castle.  He was very knowledgeable, having grown up in the town.

This is the inside of the Chapel on the grounds of the castle.

Outside the castle, looking out toward the town.

All three boys were really excited about the two sets of hidden stairs that lead all the way down the mountain to the village below.  Our tour guide told us that he use to go to the castle through these stairs and tried to find treasures from inside the castle.

Our guide showed us down the staircase, but we only went down a little.

Inside the castle walls.  I love this picture of Teddy!

The view from the top of the castle.  The guide encouraged us to yell out and hear the echo.  Teddy and Ripley loved it!

A close up on the camels across the mountain.

Teddy yelling into the hills.  Echo!

Looking at where the royal visitors would spend the night if traveling to the castle.

I love that my boys were able to climb over the ruins and explore themselves.

One final picture of our guide.  It took me the whole tour to figure out what it said on his name tag, "Loucal Guid."  Get it?
