Mt. Cook and Beyond

We had a lazy Christmas Day drive from Wanaka to Geraldine through the mountains. We stopped a ways into the drive to climb to the top of a hill to see the view.

Only Michael made it all the way to the top of the vista - the hill was too steep. He was rewarded with this beautiful scene.

All along the road were these beautiful pink and purple flowers. Does anyone know what they are called? They were stunning!

After a while, we got our first glimpse of Mt. Cook from the road. Mt. Cook is the tallest mountain in NZ and a sacred place for the Maori People.

The mountain was at its best from across the lake. Yes! The water really was that blue!

We even took a silly family photo.

Michael took a few artsy photos of the mountain with the beautiful flowers!

When we arrived at our campsite, we rented some bikes for the boys and they had a great time.

Merry Christmas from the Russell family!

Tomorrow we fly back to the North Island to meet up with our friends from Taiwan, Bob and Carlee Kowalec, who are Ripley's Godparents.
